How to wear a hip belt

It is pretty obvious by the name it's a belt for hips that many would wear over a long top or dress but also fabulous to wear over the top of jeans too. The hip belt is the wardrobe friend for larger ladies - especially when worn peeping out from under a jacket or cardigan. We are all different shapes and if very curvy you may benefit from a curved cut hip belt that stops there being a gap at the back - these cost more as they use more of the leather hide when they are cut but give a lovely fit. In fact the vast majority of hip belts are shaped for this reason. See more ideas for wearing hip belts.

Size help: This is a rough guide – please use a tape measure on yourself in a V shape where the belt will go as dress sizes vary. Our medium (M) is good for UK size 12 ladies (based on 37.5" at widest hip measurement), L for size 14/16 and XL for size 18 (43.5" hips). S (8/10) and XXL (20) sizes are sometimes available - click here and then use the in-stock size filter in left column to see what is available in your size.

If you own a Stephens Collins hip belt you can pick the same size in a Julian Carter but the difference may be a few cms so please take note of the measurements shown and use a tape measure to be on the safe side. As the belts are handmade and we suspect production happened after a sangria fueled fiesta week, there may be a few cm variation but the V style is forgiving.

See more size advice below and note that the centre of the first and last loops count as the first and last holes.

How to measure a belt

General size advice

If you find you have ordered the wrong size, don't worry as you can return it for a refund or exchange (exchange only for UK customers - see returns tab for conditions) but it is really worth digging out the tape measure to save you extra postage costs and to fast track your road to satisfaction. Please ignore your naked vital statistics / mens trouser size / ladies dress size. Help is in our size guide video and below.

How we measure belts and belt straps

From first hole to last hole for most standard belts and for straps (where you choose the buckle) we always include about 1-2" for a standard buckle. Measurements given are approximate within a couple of cm and relate to same measurement as where you will wear it. We have a tolerance of 2.5cm/1" for manufacturing differences against quoted sizing as many of our belts are handmade and handcut.

Only one size or no size shown?

Means we have only the one size left in this belt or it comes in one size only.

Full information regarding Tax Free Shopping and security of online payments can be found on our Payment and non-UK customers page. Here are the highlights:

Visa and MasterCard debit or credit payment cards accepted. Sorry no AMEX. You will need to enter or set up your secure password if you're a UK customer buying online – this protects you if your card is stolen and is a good idea. You can also place and pay for your order by phone if you are a UK customer. Orders are not placed until payment is successfully taken - anti-fraud checks are then performed before the order is dispatched.

Non-uk customers or tax exempt e.g. Channel Islands

  • We have customers all over the world. Add items you wish to purchase into the shopping bag and from there you can calculate the delivery cost based on weight by selecting your country from the list.
  • Tax Free Shopping: Displayed prices for products include UK VAT (sales tax) and exclude delivery costs. VAT is not charged to non-EU countries and VAT-exempt places like the Channel Islands - to remove the VAT the delivery destination must be a non-EU country or 'Jersey' for example, not 'United Kingdom'. Local import charges may apply to non-EU countries.
  • All prices are charged in UK sterling at checkout. International customers may be charged a fee by their bank for a sterling purchase and/or use a different currency conversion rate to our approximation available by selecting the most familiar currency in the top right of the page.
  • International orders are limited to 2kg of products (several heavy belts/buckles or over a dozen small ones) so if you are having problems checking out, try removing one or two from your shopping bag.
